My dog has never been swimming before and isn’t a water dog, how will you help him become comfortable in the water? Many of the dogs that come to our facility are inexperienced swimmers. They are guided down the steps wearing a flotation vest so we can safely and gently help them into the water. Once they are in the water, we will guide them through their first lap. We utilize several gentle massage techniques to ensure that they feel safe and secure. We then guide them to the bench to rest in the water. All swim sessions are private, and a certified swim specialist will accompany your dog in the water at all times. All dogs learn in their own time. It is truly rare to find a dog who doesn’t learn to love the warmth and security of the water. Why is a veterinary referral necessary? Are there dogs who should not participate in aquatic fitness? Can I swim with my dog? Unfortunately, no. We do not allow owners in the pool for safety reasons. We work one on one with your dog and have been trained to avoid injury. Can I watch my dog swim? Yes! We encourage you to participate in all aspects of the exercise sessions. You are a partner in your dog's well-being and your dog will appreciate your support and encouragement. How is swimming at AquaDog different than swimming in a nearby lake or pond? While we believe that swimming dogs in natural bodies of water provides benefits, there are a few key differences. First, AquaDog’s indoor heated pool provides a safe and clean environment, free of bacteria. Lakes or ponds can contain high levels of bacteria and algae that contribute to many common infections in dogs. Second, dogs (especially those with physical challenges) can find that a lake or pond presents a risk of injury due to rocks, sticks, and other obstacles which can make it difficult for the dog to get proper footing. Third, the pool’s 88 degree temperature is a key component for improving flexibility and allowing muscles to relax. Colder water is not as effective at achieving results for improved range of motion and pain relief. The warmth of the water has enormous added emotional benefits and will relax your pet. Finally, there are few suitable places in the Boston area that allow dogs to swim. How soon will it take for me to see improvements in my canine friend? This varies greatly depending on the condition of the dog, frequency and duration of visits. Many dogs will start to see improvements within a couple weeks, others with more severe conditions may take a couple months or more. Can I bring my dog swimming if there is nothing physically wrong with him? Yes, we have many swimmers who are either athletes or water dogs who swim with us for conditioning or just for the fun of it! How long will my dog swim during a half hour session? The length of time that your dog will initially be swimming will be determined by the age, physical condition, and the diagnosis as determined by your veterinarian. Many geriatric and post surgical dogs may only swim 10 to 12 minutes of their session. We gradually increase the swim time as muscle mass and endurance increases. We will increase the swim time gradually to avoid fatiguing your pet. The exertion of swimming for 10 minutes is equivalent to the effort of walking for about 3 miles. In addition to swimming, we utilize gentle massage and stretching exercises during their session. My dog is handicapped. Is your facility handicapped accessible? Yes. If your dog is unable to navigate a flight of stairs, please let us know when booking your appointment. We have an additional side entrance equipped with a ramp for easy access into our facility with parking. What should I bring to the swim session? All you need to bring is yourself and your dog and that's it! We supply the towels, and blow dryers are available as well. Arriving 5 minutes prior to your appointment time will give your dog time to go potty (this is important). Please make sure your dog is leashed at all times. Please wait in the reception area until your trainer meets you, after the prior client is out of the pool room (and the next client will give you this same courtesy) and then come on in and enjoy!!! Is there anything else that I need to know before coming to AquaDog? Before you arrive at AquaDog, please make sure your dog is cleaned and has been brushed to remove excess hair. If your dog has a problem with incontinence of bowel or bladder, please stimulate him or her to urinate or defecate before entering AquaDog. This will help to keep our water clean and healthy. Please do not feed your pet in the 3 hours prior to your scheduled swim session. It is also recommended that you do not feed your pet for a full hour after the session. The town of Waltham enforces their Canine Leash Law. For the safety of all dogs at AquaDog, please make sure your dog is leashed AT ALL TIMES surrounding the premises of and inside AquaDog. Your dog will have plenty of off leash time once his private session begins. Dogs must be up to date and show proof of vaccinations. |
